Adult Learning - It`s Never Too Late
Many people leave school with qualifications that do not reflect their real ability, making it difficult for them to find a job they deserve in later life. Alternatively, there are those who do not have the correct qualifications to either start the career they want to get into, or to move further along in a job they are already in. It can be difficult to find the time to attend evening or weekend classes at a local college or learning centre, and classes are seldom scheduled at times that you can always reliably get to, making it seemingly difficult to do anything about the situation.
However, it is now possible to take a range of home learning courses online, which are all tailored to particular jobs, in order to help you with your career. Some courses are great at giving you an initial overview of an area to improve your knowledge before you try for a job and allowing you to make sure the role is for you. For example, the course in Child Learning and Development prepares you for a career in child care, covering many of the issues a potential employer will expect you to be aware of. Other courses offer professional recognition from independent industry bodies. For example, if you are interested in finance, there are different courses available to you depending on whether you are seeking a more general accountancy career, or one more focussed on bookkeeping, with courses tailored around the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) or the ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers).
In addition, you should be aware it is never too late to take a course to improve your skills, no matter how old you are, or what stage you are at in your career. Some of the courses are available at different levels - e.g. introduction vs. intermediate. For people who already have skills in a particular area built up themselves through their own interest, for example in web design, you may wish to take a course that leads to approved status from the software developer to prove your skills, as well as filling in any gaps in your knowledge - for example, there are courses in Dreamweaver and Flash available, which can lead to Adobe Certified Associate status upon passing the relevant exam. Even if you've started your own business, there are courses that can help you develop to your maximum potential, from marketing, to personnel, to management; as well as the bookkeeping courses which are available to those with no prior knowledge.
If you are returning to work after a long time, or if you are moving careers - for example from a manual job towards an office based role - you may wish to simply brush up on some general skills that will be of value to any employer. It is possible to do a course in Microsoft Office, which is a package used in almost all businesses and public bodies, to give an overview of the basic functions of the software and develop some specialist knowledge of some of the advanced tools it has to offer. This might actually help you stand out from other candidates, where previously you felt that you were behind.
